'The Garden Palace Scandal'
Dr Lesley Muir
One of the great disasters of the 1880s was
the destruction by fire of the Garden Palace built for the Sydney International Exhibition of 1879. When it burned to the ground in 1882, the Garden Palace was used by a number of Government Departments and many significant records were destroyed in the fire, notably records of squatting occupation in NSW. Dr Lesley Muir will describe the fire and some of the interesting facts that came from the investigation of the circumstance surrounding the fire.
